Paul Dickinson and Angela King

paul and angela

Angela and Paul have been singing together at Spalding Folk Club since 1983. They sing their own songs (mostly Angela’s, with some comic doggerel from Paul) and some by other writers. They enjoy singing traditional songs, too, especially heart-rending depressing ballads, but also heart-warming choruses. Paul adds the guitar, concertina and harmonies, and occasionally, the fiddle. They also play some traditional dance tunes on concertina and recorder.  Angela used to try out new songs by singing them to her goats but what they thought about this has never been discovered. Somebody once summed them up as: “mellow vocals, imaginative guitar work and catchy harmonies both on their own compositions and a few established classics.” They have performed at folk clubs, pubs, churches, beer festivals, village halls, libraries, parties, theatres, weddings and community groups (including some for people with disabilities). They have played live on the radio (ok, just Radio Lincolnshire) and appeared once on TV and  are open to any reasonable offer to play anywhere else.

Their most recent CD, released in November 2013, is called Twine and Twist.  It has 15 tracks, including 3 originals by Angela, some favourite traditional songs and some by other writers.  It looks like this:

As well as writing songs Angela makes decorative rag rugs, one of which features on the cover of their previous CD. She exhibited a selection of this work at Stamford Arts Centre in 2001, at Corby Glen in 2004 and at Alford Craft Market in 2009. She also runs rugging workshops from time to time - details on the Alford Craft Market site. This is the bit of rug that's on the CD:

All the tracks on this CD were written by Angela except Old Abandoned Music Hall and Sweet Violet which were written by Sharon Childs, and Spring Song where Paul wrote the tune.
